I would agree ...
Most of the people that I know that are in the IT industry have trouble doing long division without a calculator. Most hack together software until they get something that works -- very few actually know (or care) about optimization and writing efficient code. I know tons of "web developers" that have never read a book on web site hacking. Would you trust them to write critical systems in the wild? Part of my job is to review code for adherance to standards, and most of it is terrible.

I have bumped into some key players ... and I try to work with them, mostly. But they are getting fewer and farther between ...

For example, I mentioned this before in other posts, but a manager that I know recently had to evaluate his employee on his bowel movement habits. He kept plugging the office toilet so that other people couldn't use it. Afterwards, he wouldn't clean it and would just let it all sit until somebody else was offended by the smell (it is a small office) and cleaned it. The smell actually became a major complaint in the office.

When confronted, the employee asked (in all seriousness, mind you) what actions types of actions the manager would recommend so that the situation could be avoided in the future. My friend couldn't respond for fear of a lawsuite ... you see, the employee was somewhat overweight and could play the descrimination card.

And that's what it comes down to ... more and more people who are very bad at their jobs, that still maintain an attitude of entitlement ... and that are more willing to make $$$ through litigation than by earning it.

No wonder jobs are going overseas. Add in the usual corporate greed, and workers who are willing to work for pennies on the dollar, and you get something close to the current economy.
