Companies are very picky these days
Because they can usually afford to be. There are so many computer professionals looking for work you can take the time to search for the 'pick of the litter' instead of grabbing the first close match. Companies are also wanting a lot of 'combination' people, people who have expert level skills in multiple areas.

In your case it sounds like you were looking for a DBA who also had network admin skills. In our case, we're looking for a DBA who can also do web and VB development. I don't know about you but we've interviewed a lot of people that would have been hired 4-5 years ago but who were rejected for rather picky reasons. When I interviewed with the company I work for now they initially rejected me for a rather trivial reason before reconsidering after interviewing 10 more people.
