those credit card RFID quick swipes for gasoline pumps where thought to be unscannable from a distance until some clever hackers managed to amplify the signal somehow... i think it was with the "EzPass", i forget the gasoline distributor that uses it, but its a pretty well known fact. for your personal enjoyment, see wired's article http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/14.05/rfid_pr.html
