And the original purpose of patents was what?
It's so hard to rememberback that far, even for us ancient relics. There was something or other about balancing the power between individuals and corporations. And something else about encouraging innovation. But there was also something else about giving a person starting out with an idea some time to cover their investment costs. Oh, it's all just so confusing!

Fortunately, we don't need to address those issues any more. The old aristocracy has been overthrown, so the new aristocracy will all take good care of us, and we will never have to worry about whether money or power or a campus full of mad-dog-lawyers will ever be tempted to take unfair advantage of the hardworking individual. We don't need no stinkin' patents, we have corporate ethics and benevolence to look out for us.

I'd be as likely to join Dick Cheney on a hunting expedition as to trust either house of the current Congress to come up with something which promoted fair business practices. Even if they did understand the concept, and even if they did somehow manage to elude the lobbyists and get it passed, and even if it did get signed, it would just be reinterpreted by the executive branch to benefit their base.
