Keep repeating it, you have a long way to go
What he means to say is they WANT software business to become subscription based where we can charge a nominal monthly fee to allow you to play music, another to archive your files, another to let you use Office, another to protect your computer, another to... where all these modest sums just add up to $79.99/month every month.

The old bussiness of making all their money from massive overcharges (read 70-90% profit margins) won't hold up for much longer with the pressure from OpenSource. So, if he can tell everyone often enough that software is obsolete and subscription based is the way of the future and enough media pundits start saying the same, they are hoping to generate a more robust revenue stream that is painless and less noticed than the $500 sticker shock for Office.

I don't think the world is ready to buy it though. What online subscription based services are a must have for anyone today? That is a serious question for anyone reading this. Besides the mandatory Anti-Virus subscriptions most already pay for, what killer online subscription services are there?
