Making a big deal about something that's been in effect forever
Well over 20 years ago, I spent 10 years working for
international transportaion companies. Part of my work entailed
liason with Customs. I was authorized to "clear" stuff through
customs and was authorized to enter the secured customs areas
at Kennedy airport and the various NY area seaports..

There has NEVER been an expectation of privacy - for anything
- when entering the US or any other country. Any documents,
printed, on tape, diskette, computer, or in any other form have
always been subject to search and possible seizure.

This is anything but new.
