As has been noted for years...

Expenses (support and R&D for "look, feel and performance") that Apple has had to cover and been criticized for while Dell has coasted with little R&D (relative to Apple) and falling/failing support.

Surprise, surprise... (industrial, ergonomic, useability, etc) engineering & design thru R&D costs money. Besides the direct-to-buyer model, Dell has been able to sell "cheep" due to little investment in R&D but now it appears "the chickens may be coming home to roost".
