Biggest picture.
Patents were never "left to Jefferson's qualms". Again you lose focus of the fact that the purpose of patents is codified in the Constitution itself, and there were quite a few *visible* hands in that. We don't have to guess at it, as the language is plain. Though agreement on how to obtain the goal of patents has changed over time, the goal remains the same.

No, the analogy doesn't suffer much. Asses aren't very intelligent. They wouldn't move unless they BELIEVED they could achieve the goal. Inventors who believe they're given "certainty and the assurance that comes from the assistance of government" are hardly better off than the ass. They are given the OPPORTUNITY to make a profit, and that opportunity alone is enough to entice them to disclose the invention... not certainty of profit, as there are no such guarantees. None.

Go on and get your patent. Spend all the money you have on R&D, production, and marketing. Shrinkwrap your product, price it and put it on the shelves. When nobody wants the product, the government's not there to guarantee your profit just because you have a patent. You'll have to be satisfied with exclusive ownership of a worthless idea and a warehouse full of unsold stock. That's why smart investors determine whether there IS a market before they lay down a penny. If they enjoyed your imaginary certainties there would be no need for such analysis.

In any case, since you didn't come up with anything convincing (or even new) on the subject, I'm content to disagree on this point. Anybody reading the thread can look at the links we've both provided, can google copious references on their own, and form their own conclusions.
