Invisible hand.
A patent's purpose is to make money for the inventor.

The public receives the benefit of the invention; the inventor receives wealth. Progress is the government's reason, its goal, for acting on behalf of the inventor when needed to assure that he receives his money.

For context, Jefferson had the idea of a limited period as a compromise between eternal ownership and no ownership at all. He scrutinized each application very closely. When he didn't have time for so much consideration, Congress established a patent officer.

From that time on, patents were given to just about everything for a period lasting long after the Founders were deceased. Then a new law established the familiar conditions.

Considering "original intent", the software patents I consider absurdly obvious would be in accord with the initial views.

Jefferson's view? He was eventually amazed at how much invention the chance to profit produced. He came to like the way wealth from patents advanced the US.
