If only Apple could resign on its exclusive partnership with Intel, and start producing AMD-based high-end 64-bit versions of Macs. Well, I'm convinced that the 64-bit port of Mac OSX's kernel is already there in Apple Labs for AMD chips, as Appel will not like to be eternally linked to Intel if it continues to fail to deliver the required chips with decent quality and stability.
Also AMD's Turion technology is far more effective and less expensive than Intel's Pentium-M series which is now dying, and Apple really will want to get into the market of ultraportables, continue to offer better performance for its newer iPod video players with additional multimedia support, for newer products to become media centers too (otherwise, the Apple download platform may start suffering if it does not allow going to the HiFi appliances market too), and for such application, where small and wireless is beautiful, Turion will be perfect, unlike the costly Pentium-M based mobile chips.
May be we'll see a game console based on MacOSX? Or OSX-based PDA to compete with mobile versions of Windows? Or other appliances like home DSL routers, integrated with media servers and GSM/WiFi phones shipped with a QuickTime player which can dialog with all other appliances and computers at home. Apple is wellknown since long for making products that are simple to use and own, and going to the home market, they could lead the way for giving handheld computers instead of the ugly GSM phones with their horrible interface not well suited for newer 3G services.
Note also that Apple is a leading supporter of Java face to .net and i see a future strategic alliance with Sun, if they both decide to give more support to AMD instead of the W'Intel alliance which is so slow to reply to customers demands for more simplicity and more security, especially individuals at home who don't have a technical support team in their small "organization". - Posted by: PhilippeV Posted on: 07/20/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
