Reprinting a short excerpt of copyrighted material for purposes of comment (which is what most bloggers do), is expressly permitted under copyright law (I don't have the exact reference on hand, but I *think* it's 17 USC 512). This is the real meaning of "fair use".

I don't know the particulars of the case, but it's hard to see how Google would be at fault, since they usually provide at most an excerpt and maybe a picture, plus the link to the original article.
