The new cold war?
The U.S. electorate's current paranoia over "terrism" and "terrists" (well, that's the way G.W. Bush pronounces those words!) is making it easy for governments to decrease personal privacy and freedom. There is certainly an advantage to terrorists in having democratic societies made inefficient through suffocating security measures.

I've heard it said that the arms race of the middle twentieth century was meant to crush the Soviet block not with weapons, but through economics. The west could better finance their part of the arms race. It took over forty years, but the west did win against the Soviet block. Could a new cold war, using a similar tactic, be underway with the clever use of terrorist acts? These acts are cheap to pull off, but expensive to defend against.
