Well, I guess I can't argue with your experience. I do find it surprising, though. Personally, I wouldn't ask someone to google something and then not expect them to use Google. I'd probably just ask them to "look it up", or "do a search". If I asked someone to google something, my expectation would be for them to use Google. (Whether they did or not would be another matter. People have their own personal preferences of search engines.) To me, asking someone to "google" something means for them to use Google for it. There's still that tangible difference, in my mind.

Even if it could be applied to other search engines, I don't think you'd ever see that in the dictionary that way. Google would throw a fit. They don't want the dictionary people diluting their trademark.
