Nice post, Axey!
I remember many times you argued with people who supported piracy, till you were blue in the face (fingers?), but I think you never got through.

While I agree with your position that the broadcasters may need some sort of protection for their content, I think they must be very careful, too. The broadcast flag idea, as I understand it, could work against them as well. If the flag will not allow people to time-shift programs that they cannot otherwise watch, advertisement visibility will decline. I know that many people say they fast-forward through the commercials, but I think in practice they really don't. I say this based on my own experience - when I record something to watch it later, I tend to skip the first commercial break (and maybe the second), then I forget to do it after the show gets moving, and end up watching the advertisements anyway! At the end of the show, I realize that I forgot that I could skip them. I do this almost without fail, and I am sure that other people must watch at least some of their recorded advertisements, as well. Even if you fast-forward through them, you still see them flashing by. I guess creative advertisers could actually time them to have a subliminal effect when they are fast-scanned, if that method has any value.

As far as the net neutrality thing, if that gets stomped down, which is likely, I will create a web site which will house a database of providers who pay the premium, so people can avoid them. We can configure our firewalls to block their crap, too. Let's see how long it takes before they buy more legislation to get neutrality put in place so they can bail out of their expensive contracts!

In the United States, we have the best government money can buy!
