There are a lot of different aspects to "viability". If customers are
currently nearly all using a product and there is an ecosystem built up arrount that product, in this case many manufacturer supplied drivers only for that product, then it would not be viable for Dell to NOT sell that product if they want to keep selling computers.

But, at the same time, you can say that a product is viable, if you had a sufficient ecosystem, drivers, user familiarity, etc. And that is where Linux is, it is better than Windows, just as easy to use, interoperability improving greatly, but people are not familiar with it, driver support is still lacking, there is not an ecosystem of support (dealers, friends, family) for the average Joe, and Dell will not sell Linux preinstalled to the average Joe. A chicken and egg problem.

But, the ecosystem is developing slowly, the word is getting out, a higher percentage of hardware is supported every day. There may be a tipping point in the near future.

But, it is NOT vialble for Dell to switch to selling only Linux today.
