there is one major problem
demand.

the end customer/consumer doesn't really need much more power (on the huge scale, so, this will overlook Alienware et al.), and they are also starting to realise this. As well, their is very little required in the way of hardware for everything to converge peacefully...

with Linux, there isn't very much that couldn't be connected and working without too much hardware...

what everyone is now learning is that we have enough power to do what we want. Now we need the software to catch up. A PCI card can do whatever it wants, if it is properly made, and combined with the right driver... Intel could make chipsets that go with this idea, like centrino does, or, Intel will find itself at a loss of viable options.
