This study is meaningless. One reason people are "reading" pop-up ads is that so many pop-ups are deceptive inducements. Oh, you can get a "free" iPod -- by clicking through an interminable series of offers for over-priced memberships and useless subscription services. People are still going for these cheap come-ons in the hope that they are not being taken for a ride.

Then there are the pop-ups that claim to rid your computer of the very adware and spyware that they're leaving behind so you'll buy their product. Reminds me of those "water purifier" salesmen who dirty your water so they can sell you a purifier.

To my mind, pop-up ads are far worse than spam e-mail. You can painlessly re-route spam to a junk mail box on your e-mail server, and never have to actually read a single one. But pop-ups are impossible for the average person to trace.

Pop-ups are far worse than the sleazy salesman who comes to your door. At least the sleazy salesman doesn't shove his way into your house and force you to drop what you're doing so you can listen to him, and then leave crap on your carpet.

I would love to start a list of advertisers whose pop-up ads destroy my online work, and send those companies some "feedback." Maybe if a lot of people did this we could be rid of the things.
