the decline of the US is accelerating

mme.... the "base" level is what most ZD net readers resort to. Most are poorly read outside of techinical publications, few understand history, economics and culture. (Most would benefit from reading Suketu Mehta's "Maximum City"). I make this observation on the basis of the responses you see time and again on ZD Net. I would wager that fewer than 10% have ever taken an Economics course beyond an introduction. So your desire for a more literate discussion cannot happen with such a pool of people.

Remember this is Americans you speak of. Poll after poll reveal that Americans have no interest in foreign affairs, economics (beyond their own narrow self interests) or culture. And I think you too suffer from the belief that Americans have a competitive nature. There is little recent evidence to support the view that Americans want to compete. (Opposition to H1B workers, fear of immigration, (emotional outcry over foreign companies running US facilities). Fear of Wal-Mart, Fear of out-sourcing, Fear of having to actually serve the country (the draft). There are a few islands of hope....go Jetblue and Southwest. And thank you Toyota for hastening GM's decline.

Here in California, widespread fear over high school testing (i.e. a 12th grader must read at the 9th grade level to graduate) prompted a law suit and the overturning of this requirement. Does that sound like a "competitive" nation? That said, see the current issue of Newsweek. Europe's education system is in even worse shape.

The good news is, the worldwide economy has no shortage of "hungry" students that don't live in the West. And here in the U.S Asians lead the way. A whopping 42% of the 2005 Freshman class at one of America's most prestigous universities is of Asian decent. (UCLA)

Your optimistic clarion call falls on deaf ears in the USA. (Though I applaud your response.)
