Slotful Americans in a Globalized World
Amusing response Ohmygosh.

Your inflamatory "slavery" rhetoric aside....you fail to refute any of my assertions.

You state that, "Globalization is the trade of products and services, not people". Yes products and services that are produced anywhere in the world. Products and services that American hedgemony can no longer control. This is a world that Amnericans increasingly "fear". I didn't make that way. It's just what we read daily (previous examples noted).

I am not a "foreigner"--- nor do I think Americans are "too overpayed" (Although many of the products Americans make can be made for much less elsewhere.) (fat? Yes. Indisputably). Nor do I think they are "lazy". It's just that the digital era and it's subsequent economic displacement is threatening large swaths of American society. After a century of dominating the world, economically and militarily--- this is a startling development to many.

The typical ZD Net reader has little understanding of history, economics and culture. How can I make such a blanket assertion? Just read through the forums. Seldom do respondents cite historical or economic theories (real ones, not some they made up) to buttress a point. (A most amusing example of late is all the fools claimng that the $130 Negroponte PC is all about the operationg system!! Yuk YUK)

You close your post optimistically. "It's a country with lots of options". Just like Thomas Friedman, pushing "optimism". It's misplaced. The reality is that here in LA and in NY and Chicago and Philly....40-50% of the kids drop out of high school. This is the next generation of Americans. So while kids in Banglore, Zhejang, and Latvia study their ass off....large groups of American youth ignore education.

In a globalized knowledge worker economy these American kids will be irrelevant. As they should be.

Bow Wow!

Cheers,
Mike
