Yes, for home users, security has never really been an issue. And Windows was never designed with security in mind - except for NT. And in business, those that used DOS and Windows had the rest of their network secured so that the lack of security would not have adverse affects.
Windows won the desktop by making it affordable and easy for people to use. Sort of like how VHS beat out Beta - not on technical merit but on price and marketing.
As for people loading Unix, it was just cost prohibitive - until recently with Linux. That, coupled with the fact that most home users don't even know what Linux/Unix is. Now, most home users have too much invested in PC software, like games, to make a switch.
