- Security not an issue?
-
That is easily the most "head in the sand" attitude I have ever witnessed. Please let me know what company you are associated with so that I can insure that I never do business with them.
The sentiment is also completely wrong. MS is the victim of their own success. For many years, security recieved less press becuse it was being adressed in a much more proactive fashion. With the dominant OS's being UNIX, MVS, AS400, and others with security programed in from the ground up, our data was beter protected. This is not to say these systems are perfect, but better from a security standpoint.
As MS moved into the datacenter, security became more of a swiss cheese afair. MS has sold themselves as a corporate solution to many issues they were not prepared to handle with even minimal security in mind.
As the world became more connected, these failings became all that much more glaring. Now instead of the a few true hackers testing their mettle against robust systems, any script kiddie with a couple of extra minutes on their hands can bring the system to it's knees. The higher degree of connectivity drives the need for security higher, but MS has to take resposibility for its culpability in this current fiasco.
As for UNIX not being on PC's because security was not an issue, you know as well as the rest of us that UNIX was not, and still is not, considered a desktop OS. Linux, and BSD through Apple's Mac, are only recently attempting (and succeeding) to move that technology to the desktop.
All OS's need to get better in this day and age for the security issue to return to its previous level. MS just has more ground to cover than anyone else. - Posted by: Mack DaNife Posted on: 03/11/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
