Let me walk you through it.
Solaris is indeed open source, but it is covered by the CDDL, not the rotten GPL. With the CDDL Solaris can be modified to A.) Run MS Office, and B.) only run on specific hardware. (Sun hardware.) In other words the mods would NOT be made public or be open sourced.

How does this help? Sun is in a good position to sell low cost hardware in parts of the world where $50 is a months wages. Sell the hardware with Solaris (and Office) and you under cut the competion that has to buy an OS.

Of course there is no reason the modified version of Solaris couldn't allow other MS apps (Internet Expore) to run on it if MS and Sun can work out a deal.

What would MS see out of this? Tougher call but I think being able to say they offer Office on three platforms (Windows, OS X, and Solaris) would go a fair distance with the anti-trust animals. They would be able to sell their apps into parts of the world that Windows is prohibitive, and if they worked with Sun to run Solaris on the backend servers for Office it would get them into enterprise accounts.

To be sure the devil is in the details but it is doable and it would benefit both companies in their battle with their real competition, IBM.
