Hmmm...
I don't think they lost any Solaris sales...since it was losing its lunch to Linux. Customers wanted open-source, and open-sourcing Solaris has helped not only retain the customer base, but attract new interest. Free is the best way to get someone to try your product...and if it's quality, they keep it.

I also hope you're wrong about the cuts being Solaris staff. But I don't think that's it. I actually am wondering about how much longer they'll stay with the Ultra-Sparc rather than going fully Opteron, etc. Designing and producing your own chip is an exorbitant cost to bear when it's not really delivering you any competitive advantage over commodity chips.
