...if I understand correctly, Sun is no longer much of a "blind supporter" of open source. Sure, you can download Solaris and several other baseline products of theirs for free, but you can't get the source code for any of them as far as I've found.

In fact, open source may well be a major reason that they've been hurting. Unless you're running a high-speed and/or high-availability system for a medium-large enterprise, why would you pay top dollar for a SPARC server when you can get a "good enough" Intel server running any host of Linux or BSD distros, without the limited functionality you have in the "free" Solaris?

If Sun can find a way to cut their costs and reduce prices on the SPARC line (hopefully without eliminating it), while possibly expanding their Intel line, I think they still have a chance to bounce back.
