and then there's "global dimming", too

There's also a paradoxical type of particulate pollution (discussed at length in a recent edition of Nova) that is actually *blocking* the sun's rays. (Search on "global dimming".) Without that, they've projected that we'd already be 3 degrees warmer! Europe, btw, will get really *cold* as this plays out. The melting of the Arctic and Greenland will cause the gulf stream, which warms Western Europe, to go south (literally, I think), resulting in a "mini" ice age. Maybe not a glacier or anything that dramatic, just damned cold. Meanwhile, where I live in Texas, we'll be frying, since the end of cheap oil means the end of air conditioning and irrigation...except for Houston, of course, which will probably be under water. I appreciate the posters who simply can't believe that anything really bad can happen to the whole world all at once. They are probably young, and probably haven't studied much history or science. Pretty much every generation gets its shocks eventually. Younger Americans have been lucky so far, but we should fasten our seatbelts for the next couple decades. It's going to be a rocky ride.
