Monopolies are rarely celebrated
Very few want to be locked into one brand of anything, much less be reliant on a single vendor no matter how good that vendor is. And in Microsoft's case it is a very mixed bag. Microsoft's Office and operating systems are becoming the most costly to maintain and deploy due to the poor security and virus problems arising from the insecure intergration of MS email clients and other Office apps into the OS. Over a dozen critical security fixes have been issued on the Windows Media Player in the past year which is yet another MS product intergrated into the OS to extend the monopoly in new markets. How many of your servers require a media player or an email client to be a fully intergrated part of the OS? Perhaps it may be a good for a consumer OS but is your environment more or less secure because of MS products?

In order to use some of the interesting feautures in their new Office 2003 you pretty much need to upgrade your entire backend. And then you will need to do that again in 2006 for Longhorn. Most companies are passing on O2003 since there is no will or $ to pay for the upgrades -- and don't suggest that the farce of software assurance licenses will do you any good. Why is it that so many people are still on Office97? Because it works pretty well for them I suppose. So why force them to spend $300-500 to upgrade the office suite? Why force them to buy a new PC to support the latest OS in order to run the new office suite? Why does a MS Office Pro license cost more than many PCs? It is not a smart business model to assume that everyone will throw away well contructed applications (be they from Microsoft or anyone else) and server platform just to further enable Gate's monopoly. Maybe you can afford to wizz away your dollars for upgrades that offer few new and meaningful capabilities, if so, I hope you dig it! As for me, I helped 6 people this week load Mandrake Linux onto their Win98, 2000 and XP boxes. Some may like Linux and some may not. But people are starting to warm up to the thought of Linux after having their PCs taken over by spyware and worms that have been enabled by poor security in MS OS and apps. Worms, spyware and virus were not "innovations" by MS but MS OS users are being attacked everyday due to their poor security design.
