Thanks for that, but...
I understand the problem. Yes, one half of the problem is languages that assume the capability on the part of the programmer to not mismatch data types. The other half of the problem is programmers who lack that ability. I fully realize that these kinds of things have happened; I meant "theoretical" as in, none of the things the OP mentioned were specific cases, but general principles. You're correct in that all of these theoretical cases have actually transpired in reality.

An ampersand is already explicit. A single glance at a variable will tell you whether it's referring to the address or the value of that variable. The difference between "variablename" and "&variablename" is plenty explicit, until you're suggesting that programmers don't know how to read.

As to your last paragraph: You're right, drivers don't need those things. I've seen lots of drivers who don't seem to use their turn signals or seat belts at all. You know what? Somehow, they still seem to keep on driving without accidents. I use my turn signals as a courtesy to other drivers, and I wear my seat belt because it's required by law, but a driver can happily remove their headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and seat belts, and still not have an accident.
