Bill doesn't have enough Billions
So the contract employees (who can least afford it) have to sacrafice in order to fool shareholders into thinking MS has saved money. Balmer could probably find this much money under his sofa cushions, but that wouldn't mollify Wall Street.

Of course, they didn't really save anything -- just put it off until the next quarter. Microsoft can do that, but not people paying rent. Why does Wall Street believe this crap, anyway?

It's also great for employee moral. No doubt Balmer will be making up for it with a pep-rally.

The ugly truth is that Microsoft has run up against something fundamental: They can't maintain thier code-base. It's too big; too unweildy; written in a piss-poor language; and has to be way too backwards compatible.

The worst of it is, there's no way out.
