Anyone remember Carnavore and Eschelon? Still going strong, and doing what they are designed to do. Issues like this are ways to keep the heat off of them, as their names popped up in several places in the past year.

These are collecting more than just phone numbers and IP addresses, they collect data. When did it start? 1990s! (pre Sep 11 if you take time to do the math) so it's not any kind of Republican scheme to control the gov't. All gov't entities from big agencies to the elected representives dont care one wit about the American citizen, we're just sheep to be lead and protected from freedom.

Attention to this kind of internal spying is bad for the powers that already do it. Why would NSA, CIA, FBI or any clandestine "American Security" organization want to draw attention to legalizing something it does anyway, without executive, legislative, or judiciary approval?
