economic effect of crusade
Ashcroft may not realize the economic effect he will have if his crusade is successful in banning porn. The crusade will hurt the economy -- every knows that a major part of the internet boom consists of the porn business. He probably won't care if he puts porn industry workers out of business. What he is short-sighted on are the other potential economic effects by destroying a major part of the economy:

1) Other businesses that are tied to porn will fare worse: Video rental stores; major hotel chains; industries dependent on business from these places that are NOT directly tied in to porn. Does he want the 3rd blue collar worker in the video store stocking shelves laid off because the stores are cutting back on inventory? The little people will get hurt. Easy to say the porn industry is getting hurt; difficult when it's a common everyday citizen who may not be directly tied to the industry.

2) The porn industry is not going away, especially on the internet. Banning US companies will succeed in doing one thing: driving these industries OUT of the legitimate business community in the US. This means an increase in BLACK MARKET porn in the US, and a MIGRATION of JOBS to OUTSIDE of the US. This means loss of tax revenues and jobs in the US which will needlessly go across our borders. We might see companies spring up in the Caribbean, Mexico and Canada (or at least their address of business registration anyways).

I hope someone addresses these harsh economic impact issues regardless of the feelings about morality.
