The price of oranges in Seville
What CPU is in the Xbox 360 and what OS does it run?

I'm sure the question is very interesting to those who buy computers just to have a naked operating system running on it. Both of you.

As for the rest of the world, the value of Microsoft platforms, Intel platforms, AMD platforms, etc. is the application software that runs on them. Things like, oh, Adobe Photoshop [1], AutoCad [2], TurboTax [3], etc. etc.

The Microsoft application base consists of over 40,000 binary titles. Porting them to Cell takes more than an ARCH= switch in the makefiles, in part because Cell is a pig compared to AMD and Intel machinery unless you use the coprocessors -- which in turn requires refactoring your software into threads that take advantage of specialized functionality.

Cell is slick. Linux on Cell is also slick. Microsoft on Cell requires damn near 100% rewrite, according to people [4] who have actually done it, rather than spending their time on ZD blogs posting juvenile put-downs and whinging about others' posting habits.

[1] You've mentioned this one as a must-have, the lack of which bars users from running Linux.

unless they can execute x86 instructions faster then Intel/AMD can natively  mattdevo | 05/16/06
