AMD is missing Virtualization
"Intel has added hardware support that eliminates the need for virtualization software (virtual machine monitors) to patch the operating system. This results in a simpler, more reliable virtualization solution. Intel's approach also makes the virtual machine monitor independent of the operating system, so it is easier to validate and and support. Intel Virtualization Technology is being introduced now in desktop and server processors."

- Intel Software Insite pg 4

You can see from the article that AMDs support for Microsoft is waining but still present.

Competition between AMD and Intel is very bad for Microsoft because Microsoft Office applications - just for example - run on only one processor and will run slower on the new multi core machines than on the old single core ones because to get power savings the multi CPU chips are clocked slower. Only software written to take advantage of multicore will be fast. That software includes Sun/s OpenOffice and Java applications

The same promotional material from Intel, which they were happy to provide me explains why everyone will want multi-core PCs. One key point is that there are many desktop tasks that currently slow down users, like automated Operating System Product updates from Microsoft and Antivirus scanning updates. But there is also database search functions like google search functions to consider. Oracle and DB2 trump MySQL in their use of multiple cores for query plans etc. The analysis applies regardles as to if the software is run as a service from a farm or on the desktop unit.

It is the perfect storm for Microsoft. They can weather it but not with Balmer, Gates, and Alchin. Those fellows are hopelessly into preserving monopoly power rather than adapting to superior hardware technology.
