The topic is the EOLAS patent and how the patent office is responding to the W3C challenge to it (yes, MS is a part, but only a part, although they have the most to gain right now).

You brought the MS antitrust case, the DOJ settlement, and the politics surrounding it into this with your post. It had nothing to do with this case, with the exception that "Microsoft" was involved in both.

The Eolas patent should have never been issued because it was overly broad and covered a topic that was already represented by much prior art. It really has nothing to do with MS or IE; they were just the (first) target because of their deep pockets. I reason the patent needs to be revoked for the same reason the W3C, Sun, Opera, Nokia, the Patent Office, and the majority of the industry does; because it should never have been issued in the first place. Your reasoning that this is all about MS and IE and that is why the patent should be upheld is what is flawed.

Play close attention to the W3C's position on this and who the MEMBERS of the special commision appointed to deal with it are. Strange bedfellows, no?

The patent office, while part of the government, is NOT a part that changes depending on who is in political office. The people don't change and the policies certainly don't. It isn't under the purview of the executive branch. Therefore, it has nothing to do with the Bush administration or any past or future one.
