Bell and the cell...
I agree with you that the breakup of Ma Bell probably had nothing to do with the innovation of cell phone technology. I do think, however, that the breakup has been good for consumers in all sorts of telecommunication markets (including cell phones).

Only the state claims to own the airwaves (such claims are invalid IMO). As in most aspects of life, all must beg the state for "licensed permission" to use certain frequencies (i.e. must pay "special" taxes to gain "special" privileges--a hallmark of statism/mercantilism).

Murray Rothbard explained things much better than I ever could. I just got done reading his two-volume work on the History of Economic Thought. Quite interesting, spells out century by century the recurring folly of experiments with collectivism. Never works, and humans never learn...
