97 and 2000 were very unstable
MS Office versions prior to Office XP were very unstable. It crashed at the most unexpected times, especially if you used OLE to embed other office files eg; an Excel table in MS Word - I lost a 23 page document that way as the file would crash office everytime it was opened after embedding the table and I didn't save backups with multiple revision numbers (I do that now!). If you never got these crashes then you most likely aren't using the advanced features and could get away with TED, Wordpad, or Writely/Ajax-Write instead of MS Word.

Even Office XP and 2003 tend to just hang there for no reason at times. A very anoying feature of 03 is that attachments opened from Outlook defualt open in screen reader view which hoses the formatting 90% of the time there are any graphics on the page.

XP and 2003 also has the anoying feature of showing all the MetaData by defualt. This is actually a good thing though as before it didn't show it and it lead to some very big OOPS moments becuase many people were unaware of the metadata feature at all.
