Open Office does rock
And it will rock harder on the multicore business PCs now shipping. The issue with Java products has always been speed.

Because of autommatic garbage collection, just to pick one feature causing slowness, Microsoft C and C+ based office products can benchmark faster than Java based office products.

That doesn't hold true for the new multicore business PCs and phones, however.

In fact, because multicore business PCs and phones are clocked slower than last years models, Microsoft C and C+ applications - unless they are rewritten to be thread safe and take advantage of threading in multiple cores - are going to benchmark slower.

New pcs running MS product will appear slower than last year's model and MS product on new PCs will appear slower than a Java based products such as OpenOffice on that same PC

In is no wonder that Ballmer has to think of software services in the new age. Vista delay is likely directly related and it will be very hard for a government agency to justify Version 1.0 Microsoft Office, which it is against Version 3.0 OpenOffice. Microsoft could literally give Microsoft Office away and it still may not cost justify.
