I'm willing to (for the sake of this argument) accept the notion that we can't meet 100% of our energy needs from solar/wave/wind.

Why should that stop us from pursuing it?

With renewable energy, we can reduce our use of more polluting/dwindling sources of energy. That will make our planet more livable for a longer period of time.
