Who's shouting propaganda
American Defense Department officials say that Islamic militants use mods to popular video games for propaganda purposes. An interesting statement. Does anybody see the irony in it? Americans are shocked to see themselves depicted as the bad guys in video games or movies. What arrogance! What hypocracy! America's games and movie industries has spewed out countless pieces of work covering the country's various wars, always depicting the enemy as evil and wrong. The Medal of Honour and Commando games cover the World War II - against evil Germans, of course. Return to Castle Wolfenstein allows the player to kill monstrous Nazis and their creations. In fact, Germans have been the bad guys in so many pieces that I can't remember them all. Then there are games like Desert Storm and Vietkong and Battlefield. Guess what they are about - killing the monstrous enemies of the US. Does anybody want to tell me that this is not propaganda? That this does not create anti-German, anti-Vietnamese or anti-Muslim sentiments?? I for my part, being German, have had enough of being the target of virtual American aggression! Maybe people in the Middle East feel the same.
Who knows whether these modded games are really used to recruit young people into the ranks of al Qaeda. People all over the world write mods. Americans are very fast to attribute any such activity to terrorists. Maybe, just maybe, there are some gamers in the Middle East that have grown tired of always playing the role of the bad guys.
