Things may be about to change.

Sony BMG has already recently coughed up a fine of $10 million to New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer relating to an investigation into payola:

Spitzer indicates that more fines may be forthcoming for others.

I'm not sure, but this seems to be only one state's actions, bringing up the possibility that Sony and the others could face fines in various states across the U.S.

Things may finally indeed be changing in the music industry.

Oh, interesting stuff to chew on: Google Janice Ian's Website and read her take on download piracy, the Internet and the music biz. She claims that despite having a career spaning 4 decades, 20+ albums and several Grammy nominations/wins, she has never made a dime in earnings off of any of her albums! In fact, she claims to have ended up owing her label on most album releases. How does she make her money, then? Live appearances, according to her.
