Microsoft spends on growth
In a number of business sections sales were up, sometimes substantially on a percentage basis, but revenues were down. Given that software is only profit once completed, Microsoft must be spending on both marketing and development.
Services and high end computing are only part of the effort.

Good for Microsoft.
I've also appreciated Sun's insistence on spending more on R&D than the market approves. A major difference is, Microsoft is going to sell everything it makes. Sun... isn't.

Also interesting, switching from Yahoo's to the company's own AdCenter reduced revenues. I wonder why how the ads are purchased makes a difference.

And, very irrelevantly, Schubert's C Major String Quintet (D956, extra cello) is great music.
