- That's a lot of DVDs
-
250 Billion lost at $1 per DVD. Even if every person in China bought DVDs that would about 150 DVDs per person. Some houw I doubt everyone in china is buying 150 DVDs per year. More like a small selection of people are buying 10,000 DVD a year or more. This doesn't even consider that there is no loss in production cost of pressing DVDs.
Now if they are calculating the loss based on Western prices like we pay well that's just stupid. Try selling a legit DVD in China for $25 assuming there is no possibility for piracy. It's just not going to happen. They don't have enough money to pay that much for a DVD. So is there really any loss? I don't think so.
Now is piracy a bad thing? Sure it is. Some of these DVDs do filter over here in extremely small quantities. Also right now selling DVDs to China may be pointless due to wage differences but that's changing. Piracy today is generating a view of entitlement that will make selling DVDs in future very difficult at best when people can afford to buy them.
Maybe one solution might be to sell Chinese version of the movie over in China for 50 cents a DVD. Sure the movie studios will make next to nothing but it undercuts the pirates. Next they build a market of paying for movies legitly and when wages move close to western wages they can slowly raise the price to reflect this. Also by being in the chinese language it make it useless for coming to North America, unless you're fluent in Chinese. I'm betting that number is small and those that do how many would import these DVDs.
Just brainstorming here so don't take this as a solution. Just throwing it out there be torn apart and reworked. Anyone else with some ideas? Ideas that would work. - Posted by: voska Posted on: 04/25/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
