There ARE alternatives
Wow USED to be great, not anymore. It's old, it's tired, and has numberous shortcomings that prevent it from being worth what they charge per month. Either a serious updating is needed, or a reduction to a more realistic fee before I'll bother returning. I played it for quite some time, but finally moved on.

The two games I listed were just examples. There are others out there that ARE true alternatives, regardless of your personal preferences. It's hard walking away from WoW after investing huge amounts into it, but it can be done, and the alternatives are enjoyable.

I tried DAoC, but didn't care for it much. I now mainly play GW while I wait for for the next big MMORG to come out. The lack of a monthly fee makes it better for the casual gamer that's not wanting to play it daily. What you list as shortcomings of it, I view as benefits (no risk of others robbing/mugging you), and its PvP requires more strategy and skill, although I am disappointed that the arenas only go up to 8 vs 8.

But, in the end, all of these games have their good and bad points. I honestly don't see anything out right now that will pull me in too deeply, so the lack of a monthly fee serves me best for now. If something better comes along, I'll try it when it arrives.
