I think the point he was making...
...was that rather than doing all your stuff on one machine, you now have two: one to run Linux stuff, the other to run Windows stuff. And you can do a lot of the same stuff on the Windows machine as you're currently doing on your Linux box.

Regardless of the "tax" you talk about, others are content to just run stuff on one machine rather than paying for more than one to "get away from Microsoft...kind of".

I mean, since you say you have 3 machines, wouldn't it have been cheaper to just have 2 machines? It seems like the sole reason you now have 3 machines is you "still need that Windows machine for some things." I don't mean to micromanage you, but why couldn't you have just chosen to have 2 machines: one Windows, doing some of the stuff on it that you're now doing on your extra Linux machine, and also have a Linux laptop, and just left it at that? Sounds cheaper to me. I don't get the impression you saved much with your approach.
