Wrong industry
You say "software industry" when you mean "shrink-wrapped box industry". The software industry is much wider than you like to think. The fact is that many companies make their money from providing services on-top of that software. Well, if they don't have to dillute their margins by buying expensive shrink-wrapped boxes then they can make more money AND charge their customers less. (Amazing how that works out.)

Overall, you get two companies with a net benefit to their financials versus the loss of a sale to one company the other way.

Do you think we'd even have neat things like PVR's right now if it wasn't for those cake-bakers? :-D
