It can't. And that's Stallman's expressed desire -- no more software "industry", period. Software should be developed and owned by the masses, not by any "industry". A lot of people who support some of Stallman's concepts may also support such an extreme view; I believe many do not, but are unwilling to debate the issue lest they seem not committed enough.

A lot of people who support free/open software apparently believe that there are entirely too many people employed in the computer industry (particularly software development), and the ranks need to be thinned. And, it's easy to draw lines between "commercial" software developers and "free" software developers. It's an "us vs. them" issue, as is all modern discourse. You win arguments by demonizing your opponents, not by pleading your case.
