Why it isn't so
First of all. Although I sometime sink into analogies myself, I regard it as an easy retreat, when you are run out of arguments. And you will seldom see RMS make analogies.

Secondly. Here is an analogy for you. I recently read a report, that said that very few people save their receipts, and when looking at bank-receipts, it is very low. How often have you had to find a receipt for a bank-transaction, for example to document that you actually inserted the money. Would you deal with a bank that didn't give you receipts, because they promised you they would not make mistakes or try to cheat you?

The main reason i need Opensource is not because I need to mingle with the code, but because of trust. The more a company says "Don't worry, we won't make mistakes, won't cheat you. But we deny you any possible garanties", the less I trust them. An example would be freeware, but my lack of trust of Microsoft makes me often spend more money to avoid them than take their offerings. I avoid a cheap deals if I don't trust the salesman. With OpenSource i trust him, because he wasn't in business if the code was treacherous.

It is very narrowminded to think/say that you only need the source to tinker with it.
