These types aren't that smart though
They are usually just basic users for starters who have no clue how the computer actually works. They are happy as longs they can open that jpg or run that movie. As clueless as they are the police still have to track down a IP address to a name. This can lead you through several companies and by the time you get there that small ISP leasing IP address from the bottom of the food chain may delete the records before you can get a warrant for the information from the ISP up the chain.

The slick criminal will alway get away with stuff but they are rare compare to idiot criminals that do stuff just asking to be caught.

You really have no idea just how stupid these criminals are. They actually trade files with cops I work with and they record all the IP addresses. Stings are usually used. Lull the criminal into revealing where they live and who they are themselves. They do this too. Having the logs though goes a lot farther in proving criminal intent.
