While we are at it, why not ban pop up blockers? Please tell my how they are different than what is proposed by this device?

How can it possibly be legal and allowed by the FCC to block someone from changing a channel just because it's a commercial? So I can't flip back to catch the score of the Phillies Game during a commercial during Lost? Won't people just flip the channel right before the commercial starts anyway?

As for the fast-forwarding, even though you can fast-forward at 5x speed (like a dvd), you still see the commercial. You will still see the product and see catch phrases to draw you're attention if the advertiser has done their job. The interesting thing is that VCR's now have a feature where you can record a program and the vcr will automatically go back and mark the commercials. When you watch the program, the vcr will automatically fast forward the commercials, usually with a blank screen.

The point is that we have always had the ability (right) to change the channel during a commercial. That has not changed with the advent of the DVR. Advertisers will still be able to show their product when the user fast forwards the program. If not then it's time to switch to a new (or not as used) advertising medium like product placement rather than restricting the user.
