Good grief!
In the event of a catastrophic disaster, all you can think about is saving a business? Get real! People will be dead and dying. People will need food, water, shelter, medical care. Who f---ing cares about a damn business, when the only thing on thier minds is making it to the next day! A business can be replaced, it can be rebuilt, econimic loss can be recovered over time.

Human life is far more precious than some f---ing business! This is exactly the mentality that I and others have been railing against BECAUSE of corporations. Money is not everything! And when you lose your home, possibly your loved ones and everything you need to survive, the last thing on any humans mind is whether their business is trading well or not!

Basics for surviving:
1 - In the event of a natural disaster (earthquake, flood, mud slides, etc...) you can expect to be on your own for a minimum of 24-96 hours depending on your location in relation to the damage center.

2 - You will be your only source of food, water and shelter, until emergency services can arrive. Again depending on amount of damage, location this can be 24-96 hours.

3 - You are your only police department. People will be in survival mode, this means you are a victim in waiting if you are not prepared to defend and protect yourself and family.

4 - You are your own medical staff. See number 2.

Do's to stay alive and healthy:

Keep a minimum of 4 gallons of water for cooking and drinking. If you are close to a river, a water filter and iodine tabs will help combined with boiling for 6 minutes minimum. If you are in a city, the water in your toilet tank can be used for hydration in extreme cases.

Keep a box of Emergen' C (dietary supplements) this is crucial to replace vitamins and minerals you will lose while under duress. Use these with your water supply. You will also need these to assist your body with fending off infection if you're injured.

Keep canned goods, enough of a variety that you meet all your basic food groups. Preferably items that DO NOT require cooking. If you are a vegan or vegetarian, you better suck up to the fact you may need to eat things that you would normally wouldn't. It won't kill you and once your life has returned to a semblance of normality and food lines are restored, then you can go back to your normal diet.

An alternative to canned goods are MRE's (Meals Ready to Eat). You can get them online or at your local military surplus store. They have a built in heater as well as plenty of calories (approximately 1500-2000 per meal) to keep you going (I have lived off of them when on duty... not always the most palatable, but they filled you and kept your energy levels up) They also have a 10+ year shelf life. Because they are complete meals this would be your best option.

Keep a small portable propane or Esbit stoves with at least enough fuel to last for 7-10 days. I personally have both. These can be used for emergency heat (USE IN WELL VENTILATED AREAS!!!) as well as boiling water for purification and food preparation.

Keep a medium caliber handgun and a 12GA shotgun. KNOW HOW TO USE THEM AND WHEN IT IS APPROPRIATE TO USE THEM! Medium caliber is 9mm and up to the .357 magnum. I personally prefer the Glock20 10mm with 230gr Double Tap. I have 3 of them with 4 ? 15rnd clips each. Plus 2 automatic Remington shotguns and a Weatherby .270 and a Mossberg 7mm high power rifles both with variable scopes each with a maximum range of 600+ meters.

All of my kids are trained in proper firearms handling as well as each having 30+ hours a month on the range with each calibre of weapon they can use. I keep my skills up to date as well with a minimum of 6 hours a week on a variety of weapons training ranges.

Keep a full field medical kit, get them at Army Navy surplus. They are designed for field use in combat so there is a lot of good things for a lot of different types of injuries that will be encountered.

Have at least 2 meeting places for family and friends in the event your home is demolished and you are not all there. These places should be within a 3 mile radius from your home. Also devise a marking system so that if one of the meeting places is not viable other will know that someone in the group is alive and enroute to the alternate site.

Keep one tent 3-4 person is usually adequate. And sleeping bags for each member in the group. Keep a pre-packaged in plastic, dry warm clothes.

If you can keep a small survival kit in each vehicle, at home and if possible at a friends home, this will ensure that you have at least a 24 hour supply of materials until you are rescued or reach your main cache of materials.

Learn about natural vegetation in your location, these can be valuable food sources. Keep a basic survival handbook available. These books are a valuable resource for teaching you about shelter, traps etc.

KEEP CALM! You can survive with very little if you stay calm and adhere to basics.

I am sure I am missing a couple things but these are the core basics. That will help ensure you survive.

Keep in mind the recent events of Katrina and other natural disasters around the world, help is not always there and for a while your survival will depend on your preparation.

Use the 7 p's and you will do fine: Proper Prior Planning Prevents Pretty Poor Performance.
