Your logic is faulty
MS DOS was successful (beat out IBM PC-DOS, Digital Research DR-DOS)

Windows 1.0 through Windows 3.0 did not go over too well, each being an upgrade to the prior version. The upgrade that worked was Windows 3.11 (Windows for Workgroups).

Windows 95 (and it's upgraded version that included integrated IE: Windows 98) went over well but the upgrade tothat (Windows ME) did not fare as well.

Windows NT 3.5 did ok, 3.51 was more stable. Window NT 4 did well in corporate environments. Windows 2000 (WIndows NT 5.0) was orientedtoward corporate environments and did ok while Windows XP (Windows NT 5.1) brought Windows to a single kernel (NT) and scored well with consumers and many businesses (Windows XP Professional).

On the Server end, Windows 3.5-3.51 did ok, the latter being more stable. Windows NT 4 did well, Windows 2000 did better. Windows 2003 was an upgrade to Windows 2000, thoug it does ok in the market (due to enhancements brought on by more integration of Unix like features).

All you ahev shown is that Windows is an upgrade treadmill and that consumers (individual and corporate) are more in tune with it (though they do not upgrade as much as Microsoft would like). The same with MS Office, consumers (either case) don't upgrade enough.

As per Linux, any distrib is a hit or miss proposition. They typically have no corporate backing and consist of collections of software and some package manager (rpm, dep, emerge, ...). They are only slighly more successful than the BSD's these days (Gentoo being the closest cross over Linux distrib). These are mroe on the back end than the front (user) end, they mostly just push out old Unix systems (as does Windows servers).
